DigiLocker is India’s official digital document storage system, linked to your Aadhaar number. Store and share driving licences, RC, Aadhaar, PAN, educational certificates, and over 500 types of documents — all legally valid.

📋 What You Need
  • Aadhaar number linked to a mobile number
  • Aadhaar-registered mobile number for OTP
1

Register on DigiLocker

Go to digilocker.gov.in or download the DigiLocker app (available on iOS and Android). Click “Sign Up.” Enter your Aadhaar number. Receive OTP on your Aadhaar-registered mobile. Set a 6-digit PIN and username.

2

Pull your documents from issuing authorities

DigiLocker has two types of documents: Issued Documents (directly fetched from government databases — most secure) and Uploaded Documents (your own scans). To fetch issued documents: click “Get Documents” → search for the issuer (CBSE, UIDAI, MoRTH for RC/DL) → enter your document number.

3

Access your driving licence and vehicle RC digitally

DigiLocker is integrated with the Ministry of Road Transport. Fetch your driving licence and Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) directly from Sarathi/Vahan database. These digital copies are legally valid for traffic stops (Supreme Court judgement).

4

Share documents digitally with government agencies

When a government application asks for documents, share from DigiLocker directly using the “Share Document URI” feature. This is faster, more secure, and legally valid compared to uploading scanned copies.

5

Use in DigiLocker app for everyday verification

Keep DigiLocker on your smartphone. When asked for ID (hotels, offices, banks), open DigiLocker and show the digital document. It includes a real-time QR code for verification. No physical copies needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are DigiLocker documents legally valid?

Yes. The Information Technology Act 2000 gives DigiLocker-issued documents the same legal standing as physical originals. Driving licences and vehicle RCs in DigiLocker are specifically recognized under the Motor Vehicles Act.

What if I change my mobile number linked to Aadhaar?

Update your mobile number at an Aadhaar enrollment centre first, then try DigiLocker after 24–48 hours. DigiLocker OTPs go to your Aadhaar-registered number only.
