eCitizen is Kenya’s official government online portal at ecitizen.go.ke. You can use it to apply for a national ID, renew your passport, register land, pay fines, and access dozens of other government services without visiting a government office.

📋 What You Need to Register on eCitizen
  • Kenyan National ID number (for citizens) or Alien ID/Passport number
  • Active mobile phone number (for OTP verification)
  • Valid email address
  • Mpesa number linked to your ID (for payments)

How to Create Your eCitizen Account

1

Visit the official eCitizen portal

Go to ecitizen.go.ke — always type this directly in your browser. Many fake eCitizen websites exist. The real site has a Kenya government seal and .go.ke domain.

2

Click “Register” and enter your ID number

Enter your 8-digit National ID number. The system will auto-fill your name from the IPRS (Integrated Population Registration System). If your name does not appear, your ID may not be registered — visit your local Huduma Centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use eCitizen from abroad as a Kenyan diaspora?

Yes. You can create an account and apply for most services from outside Kenya. For services requiring biometrics (passport, ID), you will need to book an appointment at a Kenyan embassy or return to Kenya.

What if my name on eCitizen does not match my ID?

This usually means your ID details in the IPRS database are different from what you entered. Visit the nearest Registrar of Persons office with your original ID and birth certificate to correct the record.

How long does passport renewal take on eCitizen?

Regular processing takes 3–4 weeks after your biometric appointment. Express processing (Ksh 7,550) takes 3–5 business days. You can track status on eCitizen.
